Ack! Sorry for the late reply. I haven't had much time outside of classes and almost forgot about our discussion.

I would argue that Ryan could possibly be bisexual. In the level Fort Frolic, when one has to kill Cohen's disciples (specifically Silas Cobb) some of his dialogue could indicate a potential affair between Ryan and Cohen in his taunt "It's all a game, errand boy! Cohen, Ryan! Two old birds pullin' on each other's milk sticks!" This could very well be just a taunt aimed at Jack regarding Cohen's devotion to Ryan, but, we don't really know. You mentioned you aren't particularly interested in them, but, there could be something to glean. Cohen himself is very, very devoted to Ryan and his agenda, "he loves me" or some dialogue that escapes me at the moment. I can't check currently, seeing as my copy of the first game is on loan to a friend.

There's nothing "elegant" about exploitation. Ms. Jolene may have a pretty face, but, fictional or not, exploitation is exploitation. Being a male, and presumably a heterosexual male, you might not exactly agree, but it's where I stand.

I did read most of Bioshock: Rapture but didn't finish it, seeing as it was a gift for a close friend's birthday and I had to surrender it. You're totally right about his various relationships with women, though, that's why my theory is bisexuality versus homosexuality. However, if he was indeed bisexual, as the most powerful and one of the more influential figures in Rapture, would he want this secret to be divulged? Hell no, especially during a late 1950s, early 1960s time-frame. He'd guard that with his life. There really is no way to prove or disprove this theory of Ryan's sexuality and that's pretty much all it is: theory. We won't know unless Irrational Studios confirms it.
